If you have a manual garage door, you have probably thought about converting the door to an automatic. In some cases, an existing manual door can convert to an automatic door without issue. However, the conversion is not so easy in some instances. The following are some things you need to know if you have thought about automating your existing garage door.

Why Should You Automate Your Garage Door?
An automatic garage door improves your home in many ways. You can easily open and close the garage door without getting out into the weather. If you are in poor physical condition or growing older or simply cannot lift heavy items like you once could, an automatic garage door saves you a lot of physical labor.

Once you automate your garage door, you may find that you actually utilize your garage more often. Fortunately, many existing garage doors can become automatic as long as some factors are met.

What Is the Current Condition of Your Existing Garage Door?
If your garage door is in good shape, does not have any resistance, and opens and closes without rubbing on the frame, you will likely be able to convert the door to an automatic.

With a garage door that is off-center, stiff, or is in otherwise poor condition, a conversion may not be as easy. If you like the current door you have but it is not in good shape, you may still be able to convert the door to an automatic. You may just have to replace some parts.

For example, your garage door mechanism may cause the main problems with your garage door. Your garage door technician can inspect the door to determine which parts you need to fix or replace. The parts can range from the springs, arms, or tracks. This way, you can keep your actual door, which is typically the most expensive part, while you automate the mechanism.

What Type of Garage Door Do You Have?
Each type of door will require different types of motors. If your garage door is a tilt-up or canopy model, the tracks are the primary factor for the conversion. The door needs horizontal tracks into the garage to convert the door to an automatic.

If you have a canopy garage door, you will have to adjust the mechanism to automate the door. A bow-arm device is necessary to add a motor to the door. The bow-arm attaches to the operator boom. Keep in mind the bow-arm device is an added cost but may be worth it if you want to keep your current garage door.

A sectional garage door is among the most common types of garage doors and is easy to convert to automatic. The only factor you have to consider is the type of motor you choose. Consider the headroom of your garage as you choose to help make the most of your space.

Is Your Garage Equipped for an Automatic Garage Door?
You also need to consider the conditions of your garage as you decide whether or not to automate your garage door. Smaller garages with little to no headroom are difficult to maneuver in when installing the garage door motor. A garage also must have electricity to automate a garage door.
